Beckert honored by
state association

          Disability Rights Wisconsin’s Milwaukee office director, Barbara Beckert, received an “In Search of Excellence Award” from the Wisconsin Family Based Services Association at their conference in Wisconsin Dells May 2.

          The award noted Beckert’s leadership in policy advocacy, including county and state budgets, and her commitment to an inclusive community where people with disabilities are valued partners, empowered to exercise the full extent of their rights.

          Beckert previously served as assistant director of the Milwaukee Jewish Council for Community Relations and director of the Jewish Community Mental Health Education Project.

 

Mother-daughter team write book on autism

          Judy Cohen of Milwaukee and her daughter Mindee Cohen Pinto of Deerfield, Ill., recently wrote and published a book on autism.

          Titled “Mikey,” the book presents a day at school as seen through the eyes of a child with autism.

          Cohen retired last June from 30 years as a special education/diagnostic teacher at Milwaukee Public Schools. She owns Lakeside Educational Services in Milwaukee.

          Pinto, a graduate of the Milwaukee Jewish Day School, is an early childhood special education teacher in Illinois.

          The book is illustrated by Mark Fairbanks. It is published by Orangehat Publishers, and more information is available through the publisher’s website.

 

Friedman Dental holds third free dentistry day

          Friedman Dental Care recently held its third annual “Dentistry from the Heart Day.”

          Local dentists Sidney H. Friedman and Dal Rottman, and oral surgeon Alan Kimmel, plus staff members and volunteers, provided patients with thousands of dollars in free dentistry, according to a news release.

          The program was created in 2001 to aid people in need, “including the growing population of under-insured Americans,” according to the release.

 

Huck appointed to state dental board

          Leo Huck, DDS, was recently appointed to the Wisconsin State Board of Dentistry.

          This organization is responsible for regulating and enforcing the standards of the practice of dentistry in the state. It ensures that those applying for licensure in Wisconsin as a dentist or dental hygienist have the proper training, education and personal character to safely practice in the state.

          Huck has a practice, Huck Dental, based in Wauwatosa.
