April 1 race for Brostoff seat

Daniel Bauman and Alex Brower won a packed primary on Feb. 18 for the Milwaukee Common Council seat vacated by Jonathan Brostoff, who died by suicide in November.

After beating out six other candidates, Bauman and Brower will go head-to-head on April 1 for the District 3 seat. The winner will hold the seat until spring 2028. Brower received 1,623 votes, while Bauman got 1,576 votes.

Brostoff, a former state Assembly representative, died by suicide Monday, Nov. 4, after months of bullying tied to his identity as a Jew and supporter of Israel, according to longtime friends and colleagues.

Bauman worked for Mayor Cavalier Johnson as a staff assistant. He now runs Prospect414, a consulting firm. Bauman has been endorsed by Diana Vang Brostoff, the spouse of Jonathan Brostoff, obm.

Brower is executive director of the Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans and was endorsed by the Milwaukee Democratic Socialists of America. His campaign has reposted material calling the war in Gaza a “genocide.”

District 3 encompasses University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on the upper east side, bordering Shorewood to the north and Lake Michigan to the east.
